The First Recorded Civil War in Igboland.
The Offspring of Eri settled at Omambala Area and continue to maintain the culture of Hebrew worshiping, circumcision, burial & other customs with some modifications. There was no king or culture of king-making until the invasion of the land by the second wave of migration from the Igala descents who brought the system of priest-king along with it.
According to Umueri oral tradition, Enugwu Aguleri was a section of Ugume Village of Eri Clan (Ancient Umueri Town), consisting of four families of Umu Aleri, Umuezunu , Umuokpoto and Umuenini. After the first War of Igala that saw some of the Igala migrants settled at the Northern part of the clan, these families conspired with the Igala natives to install one of her son as “King” of the clan. This did not go down well with the rest of ancient Umueri villages, particularly the Ugume Enu natives that believed that the republican status quo, which they brought from their homeland in Middle east en-route Omambala should continue and also bearing the fact that they are the Head village resisted the agitation of Kingship in the clan. They were backed by the rest of ancient Umueri clan and this led to a fierce civil war that lasted over Several months within the land of ancient Umueri.
Even though they had the help of Igala mercenaries, the segment of Ugwume Enu that waged that war was pushed out of habitat area of ancient Umueri land to a parcel of land called Agueri- farmland of Eri clan. The leader of the dissidents was One Chief Anyiamigbo, whom took the title of Ezeora and seceded from the Enu-Ugwume Umueri clan. The clan was therefore known as “Enu Ugwume Agu-eri” due to the farm land that the clan was located. It was from this name that it was shortened to “Enugwume Aguleri” to the present day “Enugwu-Aguleri”
After the war , there was treaty(Convenant) involving Children of seceded Enu Ugwume Aguleri and the rest of Ugwume known in the local parlance as “Igba ndu”. According to the covenant, on no reasons shall any of the side wage war against each other through their common boundary. Even with all communal clashes involving Umueri and Aguleri spanning over 100 years, it baffles scholars why the two communities have never wage war through the Ugwume Dabawu Boundary, citing the aged long covenant.
